One Response to An Introduction to The Flying Dutchman

Last night’s lecture by Don Dagenais was outstanding! It was my first real live contact with anything opera & was very well done. I look forward to next Monday evening & learning more.

I had problems with one of the video clips – the one with the room full of women purportedly spinning. As a spinner, I found it grossly inaccurate.
The wheels were the type meant for spinning flax into thread, but were laden with poorly prepared wool fleece on each distaff. (Wool is spun into yarn, but not from a distaff.) The spindles onto which the spun fiber is automatically spooled were entirely absent, as were the drive bands which are required to cause the actual spinning and reeling to occur. I tried to convince myself the scene was merely symbolic, with little success. Sorry.
